On October 10, 2018, WineryEscapades.Com , sponsors of the Palmetto Wine Competition, announced the 2018 Palmetto Signature Six, 6 award-winning wines produced entirely from South Carolina grown fruit. This year's selections include three whites and three reds produced from vineyards spanning from the low-country to the Upstate. We're proud that Wellborn's Woodsy White was one of those fine wines!
The press release described Woodsy White as "a unique blend of Seyval Blanc and Traminette" that created "this award winning off-dry white." The wine comprises "Two French-American Hybrid grapes grown in Wellborn's modest vineyard rooted in Northern Greenville County."
The other celebrated selections were Curiously White from Enoree River Vineyards, Magnolia from Abiding Vine Vineyards, Carolina Nights from City Scape Winery, Blueberry Jalapeño from Mercer House Estate Winery, and High Tide from Deep Water Vineyards.
Deb and Tony, Wellborn Winery owners, are so pleased to see this selection of our Woodsy White among the superb wines produced by this experienced group of vintners! With less than four months since opening, we are happy that our guests are enjoying this French-American hybrid, along with our other wines. The current season has been a challenge, but we continue to aim to produce “wellborn” wines to honor the Beninati (“Wellborn”) name.

The Greenville News May 11, 2018 noted that Wellborn Winery earned a Gold Medal, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes in the inaugural Palmetto Wine Competition held May 1 at the Historic Belmont Inn in Abbeville, South Carolina.
Wellborn Vintner Tony "Dr. B." Beninati notes that "We entered at the last minute, encouraged by hosts Dennis and Jenni Turner, bloggers of WineryEscapades.Com, even though we had not yet opened our doors. As soon as we received label approval from the federal TTB board for 5 of our wines, we rushed them to the event. The results were pleasing and surprising!"
Wife and co-owner Debbie Sikora adds that "We had won a Best of Show medal as amateurs in Florida in the past, but this was our first foray into the professional arena. Of the 15 licensed wineries in the state, 9 submitted a total of 44 entries. As the newest licensee, and one of the few to go from the vine to wine, the outcome was superb!"
Wellborn's Gold Medal Winner was "Woodsy White" a blend of two French-American Hybrid Grapes that Tony and Debbie grow in their modest vineyard in Travelers Rest. "We've been experimenting with several hybrid grapes. Seyval Blanc and Traminette make up this unique blend," adds Tony. "Both are temperamental grapes that ripen early to produce an off-dry wine similar to a Riesling or Gewurztraminer. Our crazy Spring weather can challenge their production, but we're proud of this early result."
